.: Me, the Jack of All Trades :.

~Bismillahi-Rahmani-Rahim~

".wmv, syamimi? You should use mp4 or mp3..... bla... bla... bla..." Technical stuff. The difference between mp4, mp3, flv, wmv and avi. And the funny thing was, I asked "what do you think about my video?" Yeah, sure it's good to know these things. Yes, I have a lot more to learn. Yup, now i have better options. So I was grateful to be told of this. But then... "now that's d downside of being a jack of all trades"... what?? I wonder... does the little bit of knowledge that I have need to be ridiculed? uhuh... I was wounded and insulted all right...

Now what's wrong with being a Jack (Jill) of all trades??

a jack of all trades
someone who has many skills or who does many different jobs

This concept had been debated again and again in various fields all over the world. Should we be a Jack of all trade or specialize? Economics say 'yes' for it will give greater economics of scale. Politicians say 'no', you have to diverse to understand how to manipulate people better. Doctors say '50-50' since they have to specialize but also require diverse and vast knowledge to accommodate current, rapid changes in medicine and to be prepared for sudden, unknown consequences.
"jack of all trades is a master of none"
Prov. If you are able to do a lot of things fairly well, you will not have time to learn to do one thing extremely well.

Seriously, i don't believe in ridiculing others' attempt to improve. At least they have basic knowledge that can be utilized when the situation calls for it. Don't get me wrong. I strongly agree with specialization in your chosen field. But it's worth it to know a lot more about others and be able to do them quite well. Better if you can do it really well. Learn more. It'll be fullfilling and a satisfaction to yourself. In fact, I don't even like being called a Jack of any trades. I want to do my best in everything. That's why I was hurt by the comment, not because of the information imoarted.
But for the majority, the saying should be a "master of one (or two) and jack of all others". However, to expect someone to be a master of all trades... well... Don't you think it is kinda unfair?

true enough. the problem is when one feels superior from the other due to that extra knowledge they have. not everyone think like we do. if they did, it'll b way easier ;)
